Delhi is colorful and noisy, and its never-ending hustle and bustle is part of everyday life in the big city. There are countless markets where everything you can think of is sold, traded and bought with heartfelt passion. But during the hot season the heat and humidity can make even the stones sweat. Not everyone can endure a shopping day in these conditions. Our shopping trip “Shopping without sweating” is aimed at all those souvenir and gift seekers who want to get a little more comfortable and escape the heat of the city and the frantic action of the open markets.
Debashree knows the best places to go shopping in Delhi, those shops where you can find really beautiful gifts and unforgettable souvenirs. She isn’t taking you to places where she cashes a shady commission at the end of the purchase (an unfortunately common practice in India), but to those stores where she herself likes to shop. If you need it, she will also give you advice when selecting a product, and gladly help you negotiate a price with the vendors.
This shopping tour will lead you to beautiful selected shops with high quality goods at fair prices. While it can be over 30°C outside and extremely humid, you can relax and take your time in the acclimatized business premises. Not everyone is made for sweat-drenched loud-haggling dealings in Delhi’s suffocating (pre)monsoon season heat!
The following shops / markets can be part of the program. There are too many to include them all in one tour, so things will depend on how much time you want to spend on the respective market / store. Let yourself drift and enjoy the time!
Leave your prejudices and preconceptions in the hotel and put yourself in Debashree’s expert hands. A bit of flexibility and spontaneity will also help you have a better, more authentic experience. Be open to the surprising and the unexpected, and look forward for unusual things that catch your eye. Of course, you can also simply tell us which of the following shops / markets should be in the program. If you have a shopping list or want to buy something specific, you can let us know, and Debashree will do the search with you.
Fab India is an Indian shopping chain focused on textiles, furniture and fair trade products. All goods are made by craftsmen and artists from rural India. The first shop was opened in 1976 in Delhi. Today, there are more than 250 branches throughout India and abroad. The products of Fab India are especially great, because a part of the earnings are destined to improve the village infrastructures and support the development of the countryside. A total of more than 40,000 artists and craftsmen distribute their goods through Fab India.
Khan Market is one of the hottest shopping districts of the Indian capital. However, it also has the reputation of being the most expensive. You will find here particularly the richer and more modern Indians, as well as a good number of expats. The market was founded in 1951 and draws its name from the Khan Abdul Jabbar – a significant figure in the Indian independence movement. From expensive boutiques, bookstores, grocery shops and art galleries to restaurants specialized in national and international cuisine, everything that the heart desires can be found here. You only have to remember to bring enough money (or the credit card) with you.
Greater Kailash M-Block Market is a shopping district in the Greater Kailash district in southern Delhi. Here you will find shops of many international and national brands and a lot of restaurants, kiosks and cafes.
The Central Cottage Emporium is a state-owned business that sells Indian art and handicraft: textiles, furniture, jewelry, artifacts and accessories can be bought here at a good (and fixed) price.

Since Debashree does not work as a guide, but as a journalist, a day tour implies “only” 6 hours. But quality is better than quantity!
To all the dear TRAVELERS: I can really truly RECOMMEND a tour with Debashree! I have been to Delhi several times, and one can’t have a more personal and exciting experience than with her! Debashree loves her homeland, her culture and its traditions – and she knows soooo much! She has a lot of exciting and entertaining things to tell – and always in the right “dose”. Something that I particularly like: through Debashree, one gets to look “behind the scenes” and can therefore learn very interesting details about the life in India. By the way, thanks to Debashree I became a Delhi lover (and that means something coming from me, for whom Vienna is already too big!). 🙂
